7.87 million visitors Datong welcomes record number of tourists in first half of 2025

On 30 July, the Datong Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau announced that during the first half of 2025, eight key monitored attractions including the Yungang Grottoes, Mount Heng Scenic Area, and Datong Ancient City collectively welcomed approximately 7.87 million visitors – a record high representing a 14.65% year-on-year increase. Ticket revenue reached ¥254.8144 million, a 12.52% increase year-on-year, indicating vigorous growth in the cultural tourism market.

During the May Day holiday in the first half of the year, these eight key monitored attractions welcomed 1.0294 million visitors over five days, a 15.04% increase year-on-year. During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, they received 330,200 visitors, a 19.65% increase year-on-year. June saw 1.5968 million visitor arrivals, a year-on-year increase of 23.05%.

Statistics indicate that from January to June, Datong City registered 2,383,802 overnight visitors, with Hebei Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Beijing Municipality, Shandong Province, and Liaoning Province ranking as the top five source regions. To enhance visitor experiences, Datong City has continuously improved tourism service facilities, strengthened market regulation, and elevated service quality. During the peak tourist season, scenic spots have increased ticket counters and entry gates, optimised visitor routes, and strengthened environmental hygiene and safety management. Concurrently, they have deeply integrated diverse tourism formats such as ‘tourism + study tours’ and ‘tourism + wellness’, resulting in numerous highlights and a booming market.
