From 28 to 30 September 2025, the inauguration ceremony of Tuoba Arena and the International Cooperation Exchange Conference for Cultural Tourism Complexes commenced at the Qingyuan Gate barbican within Datong's ancient city walls. The event drew 14 exhibitors from six nations including Uganda, Canada and Zimbabwe, who travelled specifically to Datong for inspections and to witness the launch of this cultural tourism complex blending history with modernity.
As a key cultural tourism complex project developed by Datong, the Tuoba Arena is situated within the Qingyuan Gate of the western city wall. Centred on the concept of ‘panoramically restoring the prosperity of Pingcheng during the Northern Wei Dynasty,’ it creates dual outdoor and indoor experiential spaces. The 5,000-square-metre outdoor ‘Tuoba International Market’ will recreate the bustling scene of merchants from all nations gathering in the Northern Wei era through 52 ‘national cultural tourism product pavilions.’ Visitors may immerse themselves in nine performance viewing zones, four themed stages, and seven ethnic totem landscapes, participating in activities like ‘Lantern Lighting at Dusk’ and ‘Closing Market Blessings’ to fully experience the rhythms of ancient urban life and embark on a cultural journey blending past and present.
The 12,000-square-metre indoor Northern Wei cultural experience zone features three themed areas: ancient-style competitions, sports contests, and leisure activities. A single-ticket system will enhance visitor convenience. The adjacent 3,000-square-metre ‘Western Regions Food Court’ plans to introduce 46 international cuisines, accommodating 600 diners simultaneously to enrich the culinary experience.
Currently, all construction works for Tuoba Sports City are progressing in an orderly manner. Upon completion, the project will serve as a new bridge connecting Datong to the international cultural tourism market, injecting fresh momentum into the development of the ancient city's cultural tourism industry.
